Response to Course Material 2

Our work on syntax has been very applicable.  Like the other parts of DIDLS, it can be used anywhere.  Syntax is my favorite so far because sentence structure can be used to emphasize a certain idea.  I have started noticing this in Latin class, where the word order of the poetry we are reading is not restricted in any way, and this freedom is used to highlight important ideas and do all kinds of things with imagery.
The American Dream is by far the best play I have ever read.  The distortion of everyday things and the absurdity of the whole thing do an amazing job of exposing the fake family ideal of the 1950s.
The lessons on essay structure have been really informative.  I thought I was super awesome at topic sentences until I was told that we weren’t supposed to mention techniques in them.  I realized I had been doing them completely wrong.  I hope to redeem myself on the second Eros essay.

  1. Nice work connecting this class to other classes, it shows a complexity in your understanding. Too bad about the first Eros essay but its good that you can learn from your mistakes. I think that would be helpful in the analysis approach you take on the American Dream. If you know how you should write, then you know what you should know.

  2. Woot, AP Latin shout-out! I completely agree with you about the importance of syntax both in Latin as well as English. Although before this class I never noticed it, the structure of sentences plays a major importance on what we perceive the significance of that sentence to be.
I also loved the American Dream. However, to be honest I think I'm more of a fan of Death of a Salesman. To each his own.
Thus far, I've found AP Literature to be a pretty humbling experience as well. I also thought that I was a super awesome reader, but our multiple choice practice definitely proved that to be wrong. Hopefully, however, the shameful moments will allow us to become better writers and readers overall.

  3. I think the connections between classes is good because you're recognizing the universal applications of ideas. The curriculum junkies would be proud! I agree with your view on the American Dream. I've never read anything with absurdist style, and find it most intriguing.
